Curriculum
All Mt. Zion Christian Academy students start the day off with devotionals, pledges to the Flag, Christian flag, and Bible, and students recite the school motto and the intermediate pledge.
Enrollment Age Requirements: Students must be 5 years of age before August 31st to enter the kindergarten program.
Kindergarten through Second Grade
Mt. Zion Christian Academy believes in the importance of a strong foundation for success in reading. It is essential that early reading development include alphabet awareness, phonics, phonemic awareness, word recognition, decoding, vocabulary, and fluency. We also believe that our students need to be read to more often to help with comprehension and listening skills. The teachers supplement our curriculum with various resources to enhance these foundational skills needed for success in reading. Students complete daily exercises in these areas. In addition, most of our K-2 teachers and assistants have been trained and are continuing to train in the Orton Gillingham, multisensory, approach to teaching reading. These teaching skills are valuable in teaching students who have reading difficulties.

The Elementary curriculum also emphasizes a solid foundation in the areas of reading and math. Additional calculation skills and reading comprehension skills are practiced daily to develop mastery. Mastery is assessed through teacher-made tests to ensure pre-requisite skills are reached to help with new concepts and problem solving. Phonics Instruction is emphasized from kindergarten through second grade, however; our remedial students are assisted individually by our tutors and assistants. We also receive Title I assistance with struggling students. Students have daily physical education and receive weekly cultural arts instruction and experiences including mini lessons in French, Steel Drums, Sign Language, Singing, and Praise Dancing. The curriculum is enhanced through field trips, supplemental materials, cultural arts, and visiting experts.

Science: Scholastic, Science Spin - Through study, hands-on experiences and discovery, students learn about the weather, plants and animals, health, seasons, and the world around them.
Social Studies: Students learn about their community, American History – past and present, geography, other countries around the world and different cultures. African American culture and history is also emphasized.
Character Development: As a Christian school, character development is a high priority – “Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it” Proverbs 22:31 (NLT). It is important to train up our students to become productive citizens in society and to know that through God, all things are possible. We are constantly finding ways to enhance our curriculum in advancing positive social skills and moral development.
